Even drawing has become a mixed media process for me. These three works began in January of the COVID Pandemic, 2020, and were completed in time for my Featured Artist opportunity at Artists' Cooperative Gallery of Westerly in February, 2022.
Each began from a single scan of a rejected small piece of marbled or ink washed paper that I further enhanced and altered digitally in order to create a framing device into which I would later directly draw.
The initial images were intentionally faint, with only light suggestions of color. I had one of each file professionally printed on fine paper. Then I proceeded to add imagery from the natural world and draw with graphite and colored pencils throughout the entire works.
After having small editions of the original pieces printed as smaller sized digital prints on fine paper, I cut the drawings into a circular or oval format and mounted them onto printmaking paper, continuing to draw around them to create a transition to the strong black mats that I cut for them. Each is framed under glass with shiny metal frames. Number 1 (shown here) is still available for purchase, as are a few digital prints.
Please see my section, Book Arts, to see what would have been Number 4 drawing in this series. Instead, I completed the drawing while working on making an artist's book from it.
